Filmation's (Original) Ghostbusters (Cartoon)

Ghostbusters (later called Filmation's Ghostbusters) is an animated television series created by Filmation and distributed by Tribune Entertainment and launched following the success of Ivan Reitman and Columbia Pictures' 1984 film Ghostbusters. (Filmation saw that there was a "renewed interest" in the idea, so they made a kids cartoon out of it to directly compete with Columbia's "Real Ghostbusters"

It ran from September 8 to December 5, 1986 in daytime syndication and produced 65 episodes. The cartoon was based on a live-action television show from 1975 titled The Ghost Busters. It is not to be confused with the animated show The Real Ghostbusters, which was based on the 1984 film Ghostbusters. Columbia Pictures had to obtain the rights to the name (and use the idea) from Filmation for its film, and after Ghostbusters was a hit, Filmation went into production with its animated series based on the characters from its own series. The series is technically called simply "Ghostbusters", but home video releases used the name "Filmation's Ghostbusters" to avoid confusion.

Even though Filmation released their cartoon to directly compete with "The Real GB", Filmation's GB didn't last as long as Columbia's cartoon by similar name. Columbia (and or Tristar) seeing that there was no more competition, slacked off on its own quality and quantity of its own series, having benefitted on both due to Filmation. (Sounds a bit confusing, right? Put simply, Columbia had the better resources available to it than Filmation ever had, but because Filmation was no longer providing "competition to Columbia" (at least on Ghostbusters), Columbia saw no need to utilize that which it still has on something that they desperately wanted to have to begin with, and wound up losing ratings, audiences, and sponsors alike because of their own apathy.)
